Starting Art Supplies Shop is as crucial as selecting a good Art Shop name.
Every person’s mindset for building a long-term, successful career as an artist combines three things—a little business planning, a whole lot of marketing, and, most importantly, the ability to create work that resonates with people.
How to Start an Art Shop
And so, in the time-honored tradition of business and marketing consultants, we would like to share simple steps for creating a successful business from your art:
1. Create great work
This is where it all starts. Without good work, you can’t expect to create a successful career or business. So, you need to be very clear about what it is you are making, and who you are making it for.
2. Get to know your target market
Once you understand all your own work related to your art and what you have to offer, it’s time to start finding the right market for it.
As with every other business you always need to find out as much as you can about who might want to buy your art—locally, nationally, internationally.
You always need to stay in touch with new developments in the art industry, how the economy in various places is affecting art buyers, etc.
3. Get to know your marketplace
We define the “art marketplace” as anywhere your work can be placed on public view. These can be broken into 3 distinct groups:
Mainly Public exhibition spaces – Public art galleries, museums, libraries, open submission competitions, etc.
Commercial gallery spaces for pictures– These can range from local framing galleries up to international galleries.
Direct access spaces for paintings – Anywhere people can come to you directly to see your work, such as your studio, art fairs, your website, etc.
The more you will know about your market and your marketplace, the better off you’ll be when making decisions about creating and showing your work.
4. Develop a simple business plan
“A what? I’m also an artist, I’ve never done a business plan!” Well now is the time to start and it can also be as simple as answering a few questions.
After all, you have to decide where do you want to be in 1, 3, and 5 years? Having a clear vision for your future artist business will help you create goals and stay focused in the long run.
5. Nurture your customers
Your all customers, your clients, your collectors—the people who invest in your work and in your career—are the most important people you will deal with in the course of your career.
Put your best for the customers first, not the galleries, not the media, not the art community—and let them know they are your top priority.
So, whenever possible, offer special discounts, private previews of upcoming shows, studio visits, etc. Importantly keep your customers updated on your plans and successes.

choose the right Art Shop name
Choosing the right business name for your art business might be simpler than you think, though. Take a look at these naming guidelines, and your dream art business will be up and running in no time.
- Consider Using Your Own Name
There are a few different reasons why using your own name might be the best option, with the first being: it’s original. And, what could be a better way to convey that your art is original, too?
Remember, it’s all about branding. One of your biggest selling points as a fine artist is that your art isn’t mass-produced, so going with your own name instead of something anyone could choose illustrates the unique value of your art.
- What Else Should You Think About?
Make sure to clearly identify what you do and help potential buyers find you online by adding a keyword to your name like “art”, “artist”, “fine art”, or “studio”.
If you have a medium that you have developed and intend to work in for your career, consider adding that as well.
But, be aware that if you add “oil painting” or “pastels” to the end of your name, it could be limiting if you ever decide to switch mediums.
- Be Consistent
Whatever you choose, be sure to double check—especially before you print up any marketing materials—that it’s not already taken. We’re sure you don’t want to deal with any legal battles.
Plus, you are going to need a website and social media accounts with a consistent art business name so customers can find you. So, see what’s available, keep your brand in mind, and you’ll be on your way to selling your art.
